The children listened to an online version of the classic book The Little Engine that Could, a story about a train that was stuck on one side of the mountain only to be helped by the blue engine who puffed and chugged and stated: "I think I can, I think I can" as he pulled the train to the boys and girls awaiting on the other side of the mountain.
After enjoying this classic story, we engaged the children in a discussion about how we want McGovern School children to be like the little blue engine, stopping and helping others and doing the right thing by being a good citizen. The children then brainstormed ways they could be a good citizen much like the blue engine in the story. Their list included: I can help others, I can be good listener, I can follow school rules. Every other week we will post a new I can statement in our front hall on our own little blue engine, in hopes that the children will take the message and live the words in and around McGovern School.
