The first grade children at McGovern School have been participating in "The Great Amaryllis Race." Each classroom received an amaryllis bulb at the beginning of January to plant and then name. The children wrote observations in a science journal and measured the growth of their plant, graphing the progress along the way. To add some fun to the project, certificates were awarded to the classroom with the best plant name (as voted on by the entire school population) and the first plant to bloom. Mrs. O'Connell's first graders received the certificate for best name, Sponge Bob Square Pants, and Mrs. Myer's class plant received the certificate for the first plant to bloom. Along the way, the children also learned how to form a hypothesis, write an observation, gather data, and create a graph.
